Song Lyric Sunday: a song I never thought I’d like

SongLyricSundayIt’s been a long time since I joined in with this weekly sharing of songs hosted by Helen of This Thing Called Life One Word at a Time. In fact I’ve been very quiet on the blog as a whole. The last six weeks since I got back from holiday have been hectic and not particularly enjoyable, as I’ve had some challenging times at work and niggling health problems. I wish I could say that they’re all resolved now and I’m back with a spring in my step and a song in my heart, but no such luck. What I can say, is that I’ve missed blogging, so despite everything else, it’s time to dedicate some energy to things that I know will make me feel better.

So, this week’s challenge from Helen is to post a song which we’ve found ourselves liking without expecting to. I’m going to go very middle of the road here. My normal taste in music is a bit folky, a bit indie, a few well worn classical CDs, and a lot of Bruce Springsteen. In short, my music taste is all over the place but not usually in the same place as everyone else’s. I’ve never particularly liked Sting/the Police, and their greatest hits CD is one that has always made my husband give me a puzzled look as much as to say “The Police? Really?” but this is one song I’ve always liked:

You’ll remember me when the west wind moves
Upon the fields of barley
You’ll forget the sun in his jealous sky
As we walk in fields of gold

So she took her love
For to gaze awhile
Upon the fields of barley
In his arms she fell as her hair came down
Among the fields of gold

Will you stay with me, will you be my love
Among the fields of barley
We’ll forget the sun in his jealous sky
As we lie in fields of gold

See the west wind move like a lover so
Upon the fields of barley
Feel her body rise when you kiss her mouth
Among the fields of gold
I never made promises lightly
And there have been some that I’ve broken
But I swear in the days still left
We’ll walk in fields of gold
We’ll walk in fields of gold

Many years have passed since those summer days
Among the fields of barley
See the children run as the sun goes down
Among the fields of gold
You’ll remember me when the west wind moves
Upon the fields of barley
You can tell the sun in his jealous sky
When we walked in fields of gold
When we walked in fields of gold
When we walked in fields of gold

  1. Sting is another one that is hit and miss for me. This one, though, takes me back to my senior year; it was my anthem. I haven’t been able to listen to it much, since my heart was broken and it brings back too many memories. But I wish it didn’t have those memories attached to it, because it is such a beautiful song! Thanks so much for sharing it! (I was actually able to listen to the whole thing!!)

Oh, and it’s good to have you back. I wish you all the best with your health! ❤

    • Oh, those heartbreak songs with all their memories! Glad it didn’t traumatise you too much hearing it again! I guess time is a great healer. And thank you – it’s good to be back.
