Song Lyric Sunday: Gratitude

SongLyricSundayIt’s a bleak and rainy November Sunday with several hours to wait until the Strictly results show. Husband is out for a bracing walk, proving that he’s much more the hardy outdoor type than me. 12YO has taken herself off to the cinema with a friend to see Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, while the 6YO and I are at home watching the Minions for what seems like the 100th time – in other words, it’s a perfect time for blogging on the sofa.

Helen’s theme for Song Lyric Sunday this week is Gratitude – which I guess is fitting at the moment as Americans prepare for Thanksgiving. I wonder if we could do with a similar celebration here on this side of the pond, to brighten up November’s stretch of grim weather, dark nights and stressing about Christmas preparations? My choice is Hymn to Her, by the Pretenders, which always makes me think about my Mum and my maternal grandmother, and the important role they played in my life. The music video, as I’ve also just remembered, feels particularly fitting for the weather at this time of year. Enjoy!

“Hymn To Her” – written by Meg Keene, performed by the Pretenders
Let me inside you
Into your room
I’ve heard it’s lined
With the things you don’t show
Lay me beside you
Down on the floor
I’ve been your lover
From the womb to the tomb
I dress as your daughter
When the moon becomes round
You be my mother
When everything’s gone

And she will always carry on
Something is lost
But something is found
They will keep on speaking her name
Somethings change
Some stay the same

Keep beckoning to me
From behind that closed door
The maid and the mother
And the crone that’s grown old

I hear your voice
Coming out of that hole
I listen to you
And I want some more
I listen to you
And I want some more

And she will always carry on
Something is lost
But something is found
They will keep on speaking her name
Some things change
Some stay the same

  1. I love listening to everyone’s posts each week… I’m always amazed at how much music there is. I really do hear things every week that I have never heard before. Granted, this was a bit before my time, but I really liked it. Thanks so much for sharing it and for taking part. Enjoy your day (even if it means you have to watch a movie you’ve seen a million times… I sort of miss those days <3).
