Stone Roses – ‘Made of Stone’

This week Helen’s challenge was to come up with a song about revenge. I don’t know if that’s what this song is actually about. The lyrics are a bit cryptic, and there are various alternative interpretations offered by Stone Roses fans on the type of websites where people have serious discussions about what song lyrics mean.

But whatever. Back in the early 90s I used to listen to this song A Lot. At the time, if you don’t mind me taking an excursion down Memory Lane,  I was living in a rather bizarre student bedsit. It had bunk beds despite there just being me in there, a wardrobe which smelt so badly of mothballs that I didn’t unpack (kept my clothes in a suitcase on the top bunk) and also a desk, where I wrote mediocre essays and kept my most treasured student possession – the hifi system. Remember when taking music seriously meant listening to it on a piece of kit big enough to balance a dinner plate on?  If you don’t, I found a picture to give you an idea.

Alba

Look at this beast! Actually made of wood.

Anyway, this monster of a stereo system was the only thing that could muffle the sound of the landlord’s TV blaring out downstairs, so I used to listen to it rather a lot. Mostly tapes as the record deck was a bit temperamental. And that included my beloved Stone Roses album, with this track. As I say, it might not be about revenge, but I did used to stare moodily out of the window and think angry thoughts about the Worst Boyfriend Ever who I’d recently broken up with. He hated the Stone Roses, so that made it an awful lot easier to move on from him.

Enjoy. Or if you don’t, see you around – Loser!

“Made Of Stone”

Your knuckles whiten on the wheel
The last thing that your hands will feel
Your final flight can’t be delayed
No earth just sky, it’s so serene
Your pink fat lips let go a scream
You fry and melt, I love the sceneSometimes I fantasize
When the streets are cold and lonely
And the cars they burn below me
Don’t these times fill your eyes
When the streets are cold and lonely
And the cars, they burn below me
Are you all alone?
Is anybody home?

I’m standing warm against the cold
Now that the flames have taken hold
At least you left your life in style

And for as far as I can see
Ten twisted grills grin back at me
Bad money dies, I love the scene

Sometimes I fantasize
When the streets are cold and lonely
And the cars, they burn below me
Don’t these times
Fill your eyes
When the streets are cold and lonely
And the cars, they burn below me
Are you all alone?
Is anybody home?

Sometimes I fantasize
When the streets are cold and lonely
And the cars, they burn below me
Don’t these times
Fill your eyes
When the streets are cold and lonely
And the cars, they burn below me
Are you all alone?
Are you made of stone?

  2. I love the moodiness of this song. It seems to want a rainy day with lots of anger at an ex (which means that I think it fits the theme, even if it’s only in the mood). I don’t think I’ve heard it before, but it seems to hit some spark some sort of memory, so maybe? Either way, I really like it! Thanks for sharing!
