All that Glitters isn’t (Abba) Gold… #SLS

I happened to mention to Helen today that my kids’ favourite songs to sing along to at the moment happen to include Abba, and that made me think of this particular song for this week’s #SLS prompt – phones/phone calls.

7YO is obsessed with Abba currently. Her favourite movie is Mamma Mia, and we listen to Abba Gold just about every morning as it helps her wake up and get moving. She was a bit surprised the other day when I told her that there are Abba songs out there that aren’t either on the Abba Gold album, or included in the film Mamma Mia. So this one, which I remember from an actual vinyl record in the 1970s, is for her. Particularly because she’s away, staying at her granny’s house 180 miles away right now, and the phone calls at the end of the day are extra- special when I’m missing her and her big sister.

And really, I know this never made it into the Abba Gold canon, but this is just brilliant. Cheesy lyrics, jaunty sax solo, Anni-Frid’s snakeskin jump suit, Agnetha’s hot pants, Bjorn’s star-shaped guitar and his eyeliner… I mean just LOOK AT HIS EYELINER! And you get to hear the guys singing in this one, which is a bit of an Abba rarity. Enjoy… and I’ll see you at the cinema when the new Mamma Mia film is out this summer!

I was sitting by the phone
I was waiting all alone
Baby by myself I sit and wait and wonder about you
It’s a dark and dreary night
Seems like nothing’s going right
Won’t you tell me honey how can I go on here without you?

Yes I’m down and feeling blue
And I don’t know what to do, oh-oh

Ring, ring, why don’t you give me a call?
Ring, ring, the happiest sound of them all
Ring, ring, I stare at the phone on the wall
And I sit all alone impatiently
Won’t you please understand the need in me
So, ring, ring, why don’t you give me a call?
So, ring, ring, why don’t you give me a call?

You were here and now you’re gone
Hey did I do something wrong?
I just can’t believe that I could be so badly mistaken
Was it me or was it you?
Tell me, are we really through?
Won’t you hear me cry and you will know that my heart is breaking

Please forgive and then forget
Or maybe darling better yet, oh-oh

Ring, ring, why don’t you give me a call?
Ring, ring, the happiest sound of them all
Ring, ring, I stare at the phone on the wall
And I sit all alone impatiently
Won’t you please understand the need in me
So, ring, ring, why don’t you give me a call?
So, ring, ring, why don’t you give me a call?
Oh-oh, ring, ring, why don’t you give me a call?
So, ring, ring, why don’t you give me a call?

  1. You know, I have to say, I can see why this didn’t make the “Gold” album. However, I hope it provided a few smiles for you since your young ones aren’t home. 😊

  2. Haha, this just made my day. I’m almost happy I waited until Monday to listen to it. 🙂 I think the new Mama Mia is going to be fun, although, I’ll probably wait for the video.

Great pick this week. Thanks so much for sharing!
