Challenge open Saturday 4th August 2018 – Thursday 9th August 2018
Welcome to the Six Word Story Challenge.
For those who have never dropped by before, a new prompt is posted every Saturday morning at 9am GMT, either on this site or that of fellow blogger Wonderwall. Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to plot a story on that subject… in just six words.
This post comes to you via the miracle of auto-scheduling, as I should right now be in the Isle of Man, having a weekend break with family. So on that note, your prompt for this week is:
Travel
And here’s my attempt to get you started:
Creating new memories, while carrying old.
See what you can come up with, and enter your six-word story in the comments below.
So how does it work?
- Leave your story in the comments until Thursday 9.30pm GMT (and possibly a bit later this week as I’ll be on another train journey coming back from London)
- Like, comment & engage with other authors
- On Thursday, I publish a poll – and this is the important bit – don’t forget to come back and vote for your favourite!
- Bask in glory if you’re a winner.
Never tried microfiction before?
Never fear, help is at hand. You can get a few more hints and tips about writing six word stories here.
Can I share my story?
Of course – in fact, please do! The more people who take part in this weekly challenge, the merrier. Tell your story and inspire others to have a go. Write a blog post, send me a pingback, share your six word story on social media or reblog this post to encourage your own followers to take part. There are various different hashtags floating round t’internet, so you can use any of these to reach a wider audience – #SixWordStoryChallenge #6words #sixwordstory #microfiction #flashfiction #fiction #amwriting. The most common one we’re using at the moment is #SixWordStoryChallenge, so linking up to that hashtag should help you connect with other participants.
How is the winner chosen?
I close entry to the Six Word Story Challenge on Thursday and open a poll which remains open for 24hrs. Anybody and everybody is invited to vote in this poll, the winner is the story with the most votes at 9pm on Friday. Simples!
Click through to this page to read the full rules of the challenge.
Good luck! Remember to share your entry on social media using the sharing buttons below! Let’s tell everyone about our challenge, the more the merrier! and don’t forget – use the hashtag#SixWordStoryChallenge.
I’ve not joined in the last couple of weeks as I’ve been busy…hoping to enter again this week!

Case lugged taxi, train, plane, bus.

That sounds like an epic journey. Getting from Leeds to Isle of Man was similar (ferry not plane though)!

Did not have a specific journey in mind but, it is a common scenario! Travelling would be so much better without the luggage. It was brilliant once when my case got lost flying into Luton. I was going back to Wimbledon so had train, tube, bus then walk, then stairs to third floor. Instead, without luggage I was able to stop for drink on way back and then luggage got delivered to third floor next day – some ppl pay for that service.

Book open now off I go!

My first interpretation of this was reading a book as you set off on your holidays… but it could also be taken as the metaphorical journey a book takes the reader on. Two meanings in six words – pretty impressive!

Thanks, I wondered if anyone would pick up on more than one meaning.

Loved both your entries this week – as intriguing as ever! But because I’m trying to stick to the rule of one entry per person, I’ve gone with this one for the poll – simply because it’s a more recent one and maybe hadn’t been seen by as many people so I figured this would give it more exposure?

Hi Shazro – thanks for taking part! We normally stick to the rule of one entry per person, just so everyone has the same chance in the vote. If you don’t mind I’ve chosen this one as your entry, just because I liked it best out of the two! Hope that’s ok – tough call as I thought they were both really good.
