Challenge open Saturday 29th September 2018 – Thursday 4th October 2018
Welcome to the Six Word Story Challenge.
For those who have never dropped by before, a new prompt is posted every Saturday morning at 9am GMT, either on this site or that of fellow blogger Wonderwall. Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to plot a story on that subject… in just six words.
So, without further ado, this week’s theme is:
Game
And here’s my attempt to get you started:
Check mate. Nowhere to move. Again.
I wanted to create a bit of continuity between some of the random subjects I post on. There’s another regular Saturday writing challenge I take part in when I can, Linda G Hill’s Stream of Consciousness Saturday, so I thought it would be fun to borrow her prompt in some way for the #SixWordStoryChallenge. Her prompt for this week was a word beginning or ending in ‘dom’ and my first thought was dominoes… I did wonder if this would be a bit too tricky for six words though, so I’ve broadened it to ‘game’. See what you can do. Extra points if you can come up with a six word story about dominoes!
So how does it work?
- Leave your story in the comments until Thursday 9.30pm GMT
- Like, comment & engage with other authors
- On Thursday, I publish a poll – and this is the important bit – don’t forget to come back and vote for your favourite!
- Bask in glory if you’re a winner.
Never tried microfiction before?
Never fear, help is at hand. You can get a few more hints and tips about writing six word stories here.
Can I share my story?
Of course – in fact, please do! The more people who take part in this weekly challenge, the merrier. Tell your story and inspire others to have a go. Write a blog post, send me a pingback, share your six word story on social media or reblog this post to encourage your own followers to take part. There are various different hashtags floating round t’internet, so you can use any of these to reach a wider audience – #SixWordStoryChallenge #6words #sixwordstory #microfiction #flashfiction #fiction #amwriting. The most common one we’re using at the moment is #SixWordStoryChallenge, so linking up to that hashtag should help you connect with other participants.
How is the winner chosen?
I close entry to the Six Word Story Challenge on Thursday and open a poll which remains open for 24hrs. Anybody and everybody is invited to vote in this poll, the winner is the story with the most votes at 9pm on Friday. Simples!
Click through to this page to read the full rules of the challenge.
Good luck! Remember to share your entry on social media using the sharing buttons below! Let’s tell everyone about our challenge, the more the merrier! and don’t forget – use the hashtag#SixWordStoryChallenge.

Interesting… playing at life could mean a willingness to take risks and be adventurous… or maybe being irresponsible and reckless? I like a six word story that makes me think!

Hi thanks for taking part! This your first time? – my memory isn’t too great so sorry if you’ve taken part before and I’ve not said hello! We usually only allow one entry per person – so if you don’t mind I’m going to pick this one as I think it’s more story-like, and you’ve come pretty close to getting dominoes in there by using the word dominance – I’m very impressed!

Tbanks! This may be my first visit. I followed some of your writers here whom I recognize and respect. I appreciate the challenge and tradition of six words.

It’s almost poll time… but I’ve been persuaded by the 14YO to assemble her new Ikea desk. Get your last minute #SixWordStory entries in while I wrestle with the allen key for the next hour … or so!
